Jamie Bain Was Convicted Of Rape Of A Boy In 1974

POLK COUNTY, Fla. -- A Central Florida man has been set free after spending the last 35 years in prison for a crime he did not commit.

Jamie Bain was 19 years old in 1974 when he was tried and convicted of raping a 9-year-old boy. He was sentenced to life in prison.

On Thursday, he was set free by a Polk County judge.
The Innocence Project, which fights to reopen old cases using new DNA testing of evidence, said Bain is the longest-serving of the 245 people cleared of crimes they did not commit.

Bain called his ailing mother to tell her the news and talked about his plans.

"I'm going to see my Mom, the one I just got off the phone to. That's the most important thing in my life at this moment, besides God," he said.

Under Florida law, Bain could receive $1.75 million in compensation for his wrongful conviction.
