  • Organization: The First Perspective
An investigation looking into the circumstances which led to the death of Aboriginal protester Dudley George will soon be made public.

The Report of The Ipperwash Inquiry will be released to the public at 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 31, 2007, Sidney B. Linden, the Commissioner of the Inquiry, announced recently.

The Report will be transmitted to Attorney General Michael Bryant shortly before the public release.

The public release will take place at the Forest Memorial Community Center (Kimball Hall) at 6276 Townsend Line, Forest, Ontario, where the Inquiry's hearings were held.

The Report will be available on the Inquiry's web page http:///www.ipperwashinquiry.ca at the time of release and copies will be distributed to media in Toronto. Printed copies and CD-ROMs will be available for purchase from Publications Ontario after the date of release.

The Ipperwash Inquiry was established by the Government of Ontario under Public Inquiries Act. Its mandate was to inquire and report on events surrounding the death of Dudley George, who was shot in 1995 during a protest by First Nations representatives at Ipperwash Provincial Park and later died. The Inquiry was also mandated to make recommendations that would avoid violence in similar circumstances in the future.

The Honourable Sidney B. Linden was appointed Commissioner. The Commissioner separated the Inquiry into two phases that ran concurrently: The evidentiary hearings that dealt with the events surrounding the death of Dudley George and the Policy and Research part that dealt with the issues directed to the avoidance of violence in similar circumstances.

The hearings began in Forest in July 2004 and ended in August 2006. The Report will contain findings and recommendations covering both parts of the mandate. It will be available in both English and French.
